Liszt & the Romantics
Caricature of Hector Berlioz conducting
Hector Berlioz was definitely a flamboyant creature. His wild shock of hair only contributed to his reputation of upending everything—from the uses of orchestral instruments to their seating arrangements.
His treatise on orchestration is still one of the greatest ever written and is still taught today.
Berlioz had strong opinions—from where to stand soloists to horn players who used only the F horn to clarinetists who played everything on the Bb clarinet—and he was not afraid to express them.
