David Maslanka: Mass

Frost Chorale is the premier choral ensemble at the University of Miami. Dr. Scheibe frequently traveled and when he was away graduate students were assigned to rehearse certain repertoire. Preparing for the Maslanka Mass was arduous and complicated, since it involved three separate ensembles. I was assigned to prepare Collegium musicum alone while my classmate Ryan Holder and I divided the Mass in Chorale. In this segment I’m rehearsing the beginning of the “Credo.”

Beginning Choral Conducting

During my three years at UM, I taught beginning conducting four semesters and intermediate conducting one semester. Incoming graduates learned how to teach conducting by working in teams. During this class on preparatory beats, I instruct the class while incoming graduate students work with the undergraduate students on mastering the techniques. Syllabus

This clip edits out the small group sessions, in which I move about the room working with individual students.
